Christmas Break
Over the two week break I wrote the first draft of a book about Christmas | enjoyed drawing with favourite children’s books and dog for inspiration | enjoyed the empty buses | and a beautiful illuminated puppet at Lewisham LIT Festival on the Winter Solstice.
A walk on the Peninsula
Finally discovered the name of the sculpture and artist that inspired my short film: Head in the Wind \ Allen Jones. Kind of wish I hadn’t: that head I’ve related to as a symbol of freedom and creativity is the brainchild of a pop artist not exactly known for his helpful attitudes towards women. Overall selection of art on the peninsula I find troubling (headless naked female torsoes, no female artists): all feels kind of dated but still perpetuating the same old same old . . .
Holiday Project
Responding to my object ― a colander ― gave me the opportunity to play with my love of circles ― and colanders! I considered photography from my previous work, for a Colander cookbook; recalled watching a solar eclipse in shadows cast by a colander when I was a child; realised how hard it is to draw a colander!; and experimented with pouring and speckling paint through the holes: the results were disappointing; using the colander as a print was much more effective; and I liked the effect of the primary colour paints glimpsed through the holes of the colander.
