Focus piece
Shelter-building group project
:
Responding to the brief to create a waterproof shelter large enough to hold a person, strong enough to support the weight of a bag, we began individually by taking inspiration from architecture in the local area and generating ideas/designs. We then came together in a group of four and discussed a design solution bringing together effective elements from each of our concepts.
. . .
Analysing my work, I notice how beneficial it was to be able to draw on others’ skills ― Steve’s experience of wild camping, Aref’s carpentry background. We refined the design as we built, adapting in real time to observations of where the structure needed reinforcing. We adjusted the original concepts which tapered at the back to create a more spacious shelter by widening the end. We began working with the tape supplied, but quickly decided to lash the bamboo canes with string ― more biodegradable, quicker to dismantle at the end of the project, and we preferred the aesthetic. The blue string gives a unified look with the blue tarp. The tarp is recycled plastic, can be reused and recycled.
The water test showed that it would have been good to include Josh’s cantilevered porch, which we had abandoned because of time constraints and concerns about whether the structure would be strong enough to support it.
. . .
I will include these things in my future practice:
. collaboration brings out the best results
. exploring wide range of options and seeking the simplest/most effective approach/solution

Experiments with Illustrator + Laser Cutting
I took inspiration from the sculpture behind the university building [I want to research more about the artist] , tracing the outline from my photograph in illustrator and converting the files to RGB as instructions for laser cutting. We experimented with engraving on felt ― it cuts through! ― and on an acrylic off-cut as well as wood. The shape adapts well to laser cut form; The chin has come out rather sharply pointed ― I need practice creating curves in illustrator!

Architectural & Materials Inspiration
On a weekend visit to the seaside and an evening on the South Bank I found inspiring colour palettes and ways that design is informed by the environment.

Next week I will
. . .
Find out more about the sculpture that inspired my laser cut.
Take inspiration from my Beach hut and South Bank colour palettes to apply to moving image project.
