Week Twelve : Submit \ Assess \ Reflect

Image
This week I submitted & received results of assessment on my design process project | took many photographs of the snowscapes that transformed my local area | did some further development work on my children’s book illustration Highlights from feedback for my Design Process project Effective exploration of various themes during the ideation stage and your response to the changing seasons and how they are reflected through the signs of nature . . . Excellent range of techniques and skills in your work . . . Through a variety of processes in order to reach informed outcomes . . . Particularly the experiments you’ve done with textures and different materials and the experimentations combining fine line/pencil sketching with digital drawing were beautiful . . . Your final outcome is incredibly successful and achieves your project aims to create a seasonal calendar inspired by nature that has clear, accessible design. Areas for development : . bring your thought processes to life

Week Eleven : The Design Process \ Discover . Develop . Deliver \\ FULL PROJECT OVERVIEW

Brief The brief is to demonstrate understanding and execution of the design process,  responding to the given prompt of Place. Vision I am responding to the brief through the lens of my interest in book design and illustration. I’m taking inspiration from the place where I live, and how the changing seasons are reflected in the natural world around me.  I am working towards the final outcome of creating a calendar, with my father [MB] in mind as the end user and therefore requiring clear legible design. Discover \ Collation and review of past work to draw on Discover \ Considering visual language and approach Discover \ Experiments with media Discover \ Research & Brainstorm : what are the elements of the ideal calendar/diary? Discover \ Design inspiration Discover \ Print spec and Production Turnaround for print with Ravensbourne prototyping is 3-5 working days. Stock paper is available in a range of weights and saddle stitch/stapled binding offered. Printing at

Week Eleven: The Design Process \ Deliver

This week I developed my visual language/illustration style | used the design process framework to redefine my design process project | created the final outcome of the design process project Using the light box to build layers of illustration I plotted out the scene for a sample spread for children’s book illustration and began to create the component layers in pencil, watercolour pencil and fineliner. Next stage will be to bring them together in Photoshop and experiment to find the strongest combination for the final composition. Designing and Refining With the deadline approaching, I made some pragmatic decisions  that helped redefine and focus my outcome. First experiments with inDesign and discussions with CM challenged me to think about elements that make a design feel considered: combining serif and sans serif fonts, offsetting margins, leaving space for images to breathe on the page. It became clear that line illustrations would give the most unified style; and I have des

Week Ten : The Design Process \ Develop

This week I experimented with combining fineline & pencil sketching with digital drawing | learned how to attach a sleeve to the body of a shirt, and how to set up lighting in the photography studio | found inspiration in the places around me Experiments with paint, paper and light These are just a few of the experiments I’ve been doing with textures and different materials. I’ve achieved a wide variety of results using very simple techniques and especially like the chance discovery that holding work to the light or photographing while wet can bring an unexpected extra dimension. I now have a library of different backgrounds and fill textures to bring to my digital illustration. Illustration development Digital drawing :  I’ve continued experiments with scanning pencil, fineliner and watercolour illustration and then working over it with the digital paintbrush tool, adding layers and trialling different colour palettes. I’ve also researched different framing and compositio
