Week Twelve : Submit \ Assess \ Reflect

This week I submitted & received results of assessment on my design process project | took many photographs of the snowscapes that transformed my local area | did some further development work on my children’s book illustration

Highlights from feedback for my Design Process project

Effective exploration of various themes during the ideation stage and your response to the changing seasons and how they are reflected through the signs of nature . . . Excellent range of techniques and skills in your work . . . Through a variety of processes in order to reach informed outcomes . . . Particularly the experiments you’ve done with textures and different materials and the experimentations combining fine line/pencil sketching with digital drawing were beautiful . . . Your final outcome is incredibly successful and achieves your project aims to create a seasonal calendar inspired by nature that has clear, accessible design.

Areas for development

:

. bring your thought processes to life more

. develop ongoing critical analysis and evaluation of your work

. Keep building on digital skills such as Photoshop and InDesign to support your work

Illustration \ Discover

I took the opportunity this week to revisit my background research and refine the ‘discover’ stage of my illustration work to support my Bear story. I worked in photoshop to layer scanned drawings, remove backgrounds and further experiment with adding textures and colours. The next stage is to work on a final draft using the winter colour palette I’ve defined using the paint dropper tool to select winter hues from my research photographs. The snowy weather this week has been brilliant for inspiration and further research photography: trees, lido and the mountainous landscapes of snow-covered logs will all be invaluable for creating bear’s world.

Portage \ Margaret Higginson, Amnesty Peace Garden at Charlton Park

I tried to capture the power, strength and stillness of this sculpture in the peace of the snow but struggled to get the right balance in exposure to show both the detail in the face and the beautiful tones of the evening light. I also wanted to include the magical weight of the snow on the delicate fronded plants surrounding her.
