Week Eleven : The Design Process \ Discover . Develop . Deliver \\ FULL PROJECT OVERVIEW
Brief
The brief is to demonstrate understanding and execution of the design process,
responding to the given prompt of Place.
Vision
I am responding to the brief through the lens of my interest in book design and illustration.
I’m taking inspiration from the place where I live, and how the changing seasons are reflected in the natural world around me.
I am working towards the final outcome of creating a calendar, with my father [MB] in mind as the end user and therefore requiring clear legible design.
Discover \ Collation and review of past work to draw on
Discover \ Considering visual language and approach Discover \ Experiments with mediaDiscover \ Research & Brainstorm : what are the elements of the ideal calendar/diary?
Discover \ Design inspirationDiscover \ Print spec and Production
Turnaround for print with Ravensbourne prototyping is 3-5 working days. Stock paper is available in a range of weights and saddle stitch/stapled binding offered.
Printing at home on my Epson ET-2750 gives me greater flexibility on timing and experimentation with paper types, folding and binding options.
Define \ A calendar of the seasons
After experimenting with illustration, listening to feedback from MB on how he has used his 2022 calendar (in particular that he needs strong bold large font size and clear borders for each day and loves the photographs), and taking advice from my tutors and fellow students and Ravensbourne, the next stages for development and delivery can be more clearly defined
:
… A calendar composed of four double page spreads, one for each season, with dates to view for the quarter (ie Dec―March / March―June / June―Sept / Sept―Dec)
… Printed A4 folded to A5
… Photographs to evoke the natural changes that come each month
… Spreads designed so that they sit together but can be used in isolation (MB folds them into his jacket breast pocket)
… Additional content on the reverse of each spread will capture ‘signs of the season’ (if there is space) and an overview of dates for the year ahead
Develop \ Content and Colour
Develop \ Prototype diary Develop \ Calendar designDeliver \ Extending the grid across the four seasons
